Close the tab.
Keep your place.
Read Later keeps the pages you mean to get back to in a small list in your toolbar. Open one later and it scrolls you to where you stopped, or picks the video up where you paused.
AltShiftS saves the page AltShiftZ opens the list
Click the list, then try j k dd u.
01 / 04What it does
A reading list that stays out of the way.
Save, and the tab closes itself.
Right-click a page or link and choose Save to Read later, or press AltShiftS. The page joins your list and its tab closes, unless you’d rather keep it open.
Come back to the same spot.
Read Later remembers how far you scrolled, and the time and speed of the first video on the page. Orange is reading progress, blue is video progress.
Synced, with room to spare.
Your list travels with Chrome Sync. When Sync runs out of space, new pages stay on this computer in a muted orange, and move to Sync once there’s room.
Nothing is really gone.
Every page you save is also kept in an Archive on this computer, up to 10,000 pages, for as long as you choose. Export your list as JSON or JSONL and import it wherever you use Read Later.

Anywhere in Chrome, AltShiftS saves the current page and AltShiftZ opens your list. Change them at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
03 / 04Settings
A few settings. Sensible defaults.
Light and dark follow your system. Everything else lives on one Options page, and display choices stay on the computer you set them on.
04 / 04Privacy
Open source. No account.
- Price
- Free. The code is on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license.
- Account
- None. Sync uses the Google account already signed in to Chrome.
- Where data lives
- In Chrome’s own storage. Synced pages use Chrome Sync; the Archive and overflow pages stay on this computer.
- What leaves your browser
- To fill in a title, Read Later may fetch the saved page. Site icons are requested from Google, which sees the site’s domain.
- Limits
- Reading position works on most pages and can shift with window size or layout. Video resumes for the first HTML video on a page. PDFs and some sites aren’t supported.
